Nvidia has announced a new cooling system designed to reduce water consumption inside data centers, a genuine but narrowly scoped improvement that sidesteps the larger issue: the fossil fuel power plants supplying AI's energy appetite consume far more water upstream. The distinction matters because it allows a meaningful-sounding environmental commitment to obscure the structural problem rather than address it. Honest climate accounting for AI infrastructure requires looking at the whole supply chain, not just the server room.
